Cigars are much like wine – just because something is expensive doesn’t necessarily mean you will like it. In addition, the one you fall in love with today may not always be your favorite, and one you don’t like at all could end up being enjoyable later as your palate evolves. The idea is to nail down your preferred flavors, aromas, strengths, lengths, wrappers, and shapes, as well as whether you like an infused cigar or not. While cigar ratings are based on a 100-point system like wines or using a star system, you should use them mostly as a guide, not as a guarantee you will like it.
One of the attributes you will look at when you buy cigars is the length of the cigar. It will give you an idea of how long it will take to smoke it, although the shape can contribute to the smoke time as well. There is a large range to consider, with a 4” cigar lasting 15 to 20 minutes and a 7 to 7-3/4“cigar lasting 1.5 to 2 hours, with several options in between.
